1938. Isolated and struggling with the failure of his recent plays, Cocteau turns the tables. The public wants to be entertained? In Les parents terribles, the playwright paints a vaudeville with a relentless mechanism. And it hits the nail on the head. The theatres are packed, the critics are raving, the extreme right is scandalized. Everyone sees right through the playwright, who, while making vaudeville work at full speed, takes this canonical form of bourgeois theatre in the wrong direction. In a family turned upside down, Yvonne, the mother, has a sickly love for her son Michel, who wants to marry the young Madeleine. Georges, the father, is Madeleine's lover. He is also secretly loved by Léo, Yvonne's sister. This explosive cocktail gives Cocteau the opportunity to "faithfully portray a society adrift". To return to a certain idea of theatre. "I tried to write a play that, far from being a pretext for a production, would serve as a pretext for great actors," he says. Christophe Perton got the message and assembled a top-notch cast - Charles Berling, Muriel Mayette, Maria de Meideros, Emile Berling, Lola Créton - to ride this infernal machine of formidable comic energy.
