A feminist parable before its time, the revolutionary Carmen planted - a century before May '68 - some beautiful banderillas in the flanks of the patriarchy. Banderillas? Forget the folklore; it is a Carmen of our time that François Mauduit summons. A former dancer with Maurice Béjart, now at the head of his own Ballet, the choreographer has set out to reshuffle the cards of gender and desire in a contemporary adaptation for sixteen performers. Using a choreographic style and a strong theatricality, women and men overturn stereotypes to express the complexity of love. This complexity is also eloquently reflected in the rich musical framework chosen by François Mauduit. The iconic score of Carmen travels with other lesser-known music by Georges Bizet, is transformed by borrowing from different adaptations - guitar, suite for orchestra - and even escapes to fantastic horizons by quoting Isoline, by composer André Messager. A musical tale in which two young lovers exchange sexes to continue loving each other, against all odds. From all eternity, love is a rebellious bird!
