Since 1995, Auxerre has been a member of the "Villes d’Art et d’Histoire" (Towns of Art and History) network comprising the most picturesque towns in France.
More than just a label of quality, this membership highlights the town's commitment to develop public access to its heritage, for both tourists and residents. Making our heritage accessible to all and thus allowing everyone to learn about culture and society is one of the key objectives of the Service Animation du Patrimoine in Auxerre. "Tell me, haven't you noticed how, when strolling in this town between the buildings populating it, some are silent, others speak and yet others, the rarest of all, sing?" (Paul Valéry, Eupalinos ou l’Architecte, 1924).
Since 2005, thematic visits have been proposed to help you explore Auxerre and its main sites (30 different themes). These visits are led by guides accredited by the French Ministry for Culture, who take delight in sharing their love for this beautiful town with you. Each visit lasts about an hour and a half and takes place on friday, saturday, sunday and monday from 3rd July to 31st August (except on 13rd July) and once or twice a week (at weekends) from October to May.
Tickets may be bought on the day from the Tourist Office (normal price:€5; reduced price for students, job seekers and "passport" holders:€3; buy 4 tickets and get 1 free).
The detailed programme and visits timetable are available at the Tourist Office.
